If you need to clean them, give them a rinse in a bucket using water from your aquarium. Tap water will kill the good bacteria on the Bio Balls. Why are Bio Balls better than Lava Rock? Overtime the porous Lava Rocks' holes will get clogged and the rough surface makes it difficult to clean, which reduces beneficial bacteria surface area.
